After the last Great War on Monotheism, global society had finally crumbled under its own greedy individualism.  The World Unified Countries, the only viable political structure remaining on the planet, instituted The Great Reclamation.  Compassion and self-sacrifice for Mother Earth as well as the Republic was the new paradigm.  Citizens were guided through proper choice by sliverchips embedded in their left hand. 'Slivers' as they were known contained all information about a citizen from genome to financial status.  The Safety Monitoring System tracked all citizens for their safety and wellbeing.

Imagine a dynamic new society where all are encouraged to achieve social equality.  Chronic individualism has been deemed an affliction.  Oppositional Compliance Disorder (OCD), Involuntary Emotional Disorder (IED), and Hyper-individualism (H) were treatable maladies.  Thank Freedom the government was available to help citizens realize their full wellness potential.  If a citizen was found to be 'afflicted', they were entitled to free interventions through the Republic's Health Compliance Administration (HCA).

Jacob Holt was a tiny cog in the World Unified Countries vast civil service. Humankind now possessed the most permissive society of any in its many eons of existence.  Citizens were afforded any and all enjoyments available, according to their Citizens Value Quotient (CVQ). Many were taboo in earlier times. All a citizen of The Great Republic had to do was play by the rules.  But Jacob had a disability, a disability which caused him to experience non-compliance. This was where Jacob’s trouble began…
